Sunflowers are easy to grow and a great project to share with the kids over the summer months.
If you have received Sunflower seeds from me, growing tips are included below.
- They need lots of light, so make sure you choose a nice sunny spot. It’s best to have them near a fence or wall so they’re protected from the wind.
- Sow the seeds at the right time of year. Sunflowers like to grow when the weather’s warm so, in New Zealand this means planting in early Oct – Nov.
- Push the seeds into soft soil. Make sure they’re at least 2 centimeters deep.
- Water gently and don’t let the soil dry out (but don’t give the bed so much water that it makes puddles).
- As the plants grow, keep them well watered.
- Sunflower plants should reach a good size after about 10 weeks.
